Hunting, fishing, and gathering plants are how most people in hunting and gathering societies make a living. Early human cultures were utterly dependent on their immediate surroundings to thrive. The community had to move to a place where resources were abundant when the animals went, the vegetation died, or the rivers dried up. In hunting and gathering communities, everyone shared equally in the work. As a result of society's mobility, these societies did not accumulate much surplus material.

These societies most likely also employed some form of gender-based labor division. Men most likely traveled far to seek and catch larger animals. The Women protected and reared the young, hunted smaller animals, gathered plants, manufactured clothes, and assisted the males in defending the village from invading tribes.
