In an open primary anyone can vote for any candidate in either party regardless of whether they are registered democrat or republican. In a closed primary you can only vote for someone in your registered party. a primary in which members of a party nominate its candidates by direct vote.
A direct primary is when in an election the voters vote directly. An open primary is when anyone can vote for the nominee regardless of whether or not they are republican, democratic, or any of the third parties. In fact in an open primary you don't even need to announce what party you belong to. In a closed primary you can only vote for your party. That means that republicans vote for republicans, and democrats vote for democrats. I hope this helps!
