Access to the Mississippi--Capture of New Orleans gave the Union access to the Mississippi and the all important port of New Orleans.

The New Orleans port allowed for the South to move supplies easily from the east to west. Without it they were unable to equip western areas allowing for an easy take over by the Union forces. This also gives the Union access to the Mississippi.
The capture was a crucial victory for the union soldiers

New Orleans  was a strategic harbor for the confederate because it served as a supply line to Mississippi. By taking the port town, the union soldiers basically closed all the available supply lines to the confederate soldiers hence technically winning the war.
