While both organizations strove toward international peace, the United Nations' success was due to a number of causes. The push to persuade both political parties that such an institution was necessary was launched by President Roosevelt. It was considerably easier to prove the organization's necessity once the Senate approved it.
Furthermore, with the outbreak of World War II, many people (both civilian and military) believed that such an international peacekeeping organization was required.

They haven't, and such missions' restricted mandates have failed to avoid conflict on numerous occasions since 1945.
