The rights guaranteed in the 14th amendment are often referred to as a person's due process rights. These due process rights ensure that all American citizens will have the rights guaranteed in the Constitution. This includes the right to a trial, right to an attorney, the ability to have their case heard in front of a jury of their peers, etc. The goal of this was to protect newly freed slaves in American society, as these individuals were often treated less than equally.
