In August 1964, two U.S. destroyers that were stationed in the Gulf of Tonkin in Vietnam radioed that they had been fired upon by North Vietnamese forces. In response to the reports about these incidents, President Lyndon B. Johnson requested congress to increase military presence in Vietnam.
The USA however faced a number of challenges in the Vietnam war. They were supporting a very unpopular dictator, and the south Vietnamese would better join the Vietcong that was fighting alongside the North Korean communist forces.
