Sauntering was different than "hiking" or rushing through life. Muir believed that sauntering through life, or slowly meandering through taking time to visit every thing in one's path, is the only way to appreciate the true beauty around us.
A person shouldn't measure life's worth by hiking (a metaphor for money and success) but rather by sauntering (a metaphor for beauty and love and friendship).
