What happened during the Cold War?

From 1945 to 1959, the Superpowers built up their nuclear arsenal and regularly threatened each other indirectly and occasionally directly.

This culminated with the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 that saw the world on the brink of Nuclear War. After this time was passed with negotiation, detente then happened and the 1980s saw the tearing down of walls.
