The scale on a map is 1 centimeter equals 8 miles. If the actual distance between New York and Washington is 226 miles, how far apart will these 2 cities be on the map?

28.25 cm. The ratio will be 1/8. The equation will be 1/8 * x/226. (* is multiplication). You will solve the equation by cross multiplying. The equation will now become: 1(226) = 8x. Finally, solve for x-->    226 = 8x --> (divide both sides by 8) --> x = 28.25.
