Steve is displaying symbolic ethnicity. Symbolic ethnicity is practiced and enjoyed by white Americans and it is viewed as a loyalty to and pride in a cultural tradition that can be experienced emotionally and lived without having to be incorporated to the person's way of behaving every day. In the US, symbolic ethnicity is a crucial component to their cultural identity.
