One reason would be because they didn't have work and wanted to start a better life in the land of the free! Reason two, most immigrants were from Europe in the 1800s and lot's of them wanted to get away from war and start fresh.. Lots of difficulties, some would be leaving family and friends behind another would be the language barrier..
