One major contribution of the churchs fathers to the canon: was their use of the Gospels and the letters of the Apostles.
A canon in this context does not refer to a weapon, but to a set of scripture that posses a certain level of authority within religious communities. Gospels are considered to be the representation of God's message while the letters of the apostles are considered to be a source of example on how the people that favored by God behave.
