The author uses a chronological text structure in this excerpt because it gives readers a clear picture of the sequence of events.

In a text, there are various ways of organizing the information. Choosing one depends on the type of information we present and the way we think it is going to help the reader understand it better. The chronological structure shows information arranged by the time in which each event described ocurred (first one thing happened, and then another). This is helpful to understand the evolution, or the causes and consequences of the events. For example, in a history text the information will be usually presented in chronological order as events lead to other events or have influence over them.
