  3. Transform plate boundaries.

A place like California is close to a transform plate boundary. Transform plate boundaries results where plates moves past one another. This is the cause of the San Andreas fault system which triggers earthquake in California. When plates move past one another, a lot of geologic and tectonic activities results. The most prominient is earthquake activites triggered by rebounding of moving plates.
