It soon became a symbol of their resistance to the impositions of the U.S. government towards them. The government and white population feared it could cause numerous rebelions, it was seen as a threat. They wanted the Ghost Dance eliminated, this made the tension grow. In an attemp to stop it, Sitting Bull was killed, two weeks later the Wounded Knee Massacre took place (December 29, 1890).
