Step 1: Preparation
In this activity, you will write a nature myth of your own using an online workshop based on a Writing with Writers workshop by author Jane Yolen. Jane Yolen suggests using the following brainstorming process to write a myth:

1. Read a myth!
Before writing a myth of your own, it’s useful to read other myths to gain inspiration or provide a model for your work. Search online for a short retelling of a myth, ideally something just one or two pages long. Think about the structure of the myth and how it emphasizes certain elements in the story.

2. Choose a topic
For a nature myth, Yolen recommends picking a natural phenomenon you want to write about and observe it carefully (with the modern internet, you should be able to find a video of the phenomenon easily, but ideally you’ll be able to write about something you’ve personally experienced).

3. Brainstorm about the phenomenon
Write down what it’s like to experience the phenomenon, especially how it affects the senses—the “smells, sights, and sounds connected to this natural phenomenon.”

4. Word association
From those words, pick some key words; for example, Yolen says that the desert might be evoked from works like sand, rain, gully, and wash. Then, use a thesaurus, dictionary, or online equivalent and find as many synonyms, phrases, and meanings for those words as you can. In the desert example, Yolen suggested grain, granule, gravel, shingle, powder, and pulverizer. Through this process, visualize those words—what pops up in your mind’s eye as you hear them. Use those mental images to help build the myth. In Yolen’s example, she notes that the word “pulverizer” made her think of a pepper grinder.

5. Ask yourself “What if…?”
Once you have the key terms connected to the myth and have considered what those words evoke, you can ask yourself “What if…?” Yolen’s pepper grinder becomes the tool of a chef who finds a magical pepper grinder than ends up grinding out so much sand that the landscape is replaced with a vast desert.

Step 2: Writing Your Own Myth
Using Jane Yolen’s instructions, brainstorm and create a myth of your own. Your myth should be at least FIVE paragraphs long and must be a nature myth, but you can choose any phenomenon you would like the myth to explain. This could cover age-old phenomenon, such as what causes changes in the weather or explaining the day/night cycle, or you could tell a myth more related to hard-to-explain natural phenomenon in our modern world: perhaps explaining why socks disappear in the laundry or why drawers full of cooking utensils always get jammed shut!

Submit your document containing the final version of your myth.

Certainly! Let's create a nature myth together. Since you have the freedom to choose any phenomenon, let's go with the modern and relatable topic of "why socks disappear in the laundry." Below is a brainstorming and outline to help you get started on your myth:

**Title: The Sock's Voyage**

**Paragraph 1: Introduction**

In a world where socks mysteriously vanish in the laundry, there exists a hidden realm called Socklantis, a mystical land beneath the washing machine. Socklantis is home to the Sock Spirits, guardians of the sock dimension.

**Paragraph 2: Describing the Phenomenon**

Describe the experience of losing socks in the laundry—how they enter the washing machine as pairs but often emerge as lonely singles. Highlight the frustration and mystery surrounding this phenomenon.

**Paragraph 3: Introducing Socklantis and Sock Spirits**

Introduce Socklantis as a vibrant realm filled with flowing rivers of fabric softener and glowing lint forests. The Sock Spirits, ethereal beings with patterns reflecting their personalities, maintain the balance of the sock dimension.

**Paragraph 4: The Magical Washing Ritual**

Explain the ancient washing ritual conducted by the Sock Spirits to keep the sock dimension in harmony. Each cycle involves a dance around the Great Sock Altar, where magical detergent is sprinkled, and the Spin Cycle Oracle foretells the fate of socks.

**Paragraph 5: The Unintended Consequence**

Detail a fateful day when a mischievous Sock Spirit named Whirlwindia decides to play a prank during the washing ritual, causing a disruption in the sock dimension. The consequence is socks being transported to various places in the human world.

**Paragraph 6: Conclusion and Moral**

Conclude the myth by emphasizing the importance of balance and harmony in both the mystical Socklantis and the human laundry. Perhaps include a moral about appreciating the magic within everyday phenomena.

Remember to use vivid imagery, engage the senses, and infuse a touch of whimsy in your writing. Once you've developed the paragraphs, you can expand and refine each section to craft your final myth. Good luck!
