x + 2y = 96...x = 18
18 + 2y = 96
2y = 96 - 18
2y = 78
y = 78/2
y = 39

so there were 18 free throws totaling 18 points and there were 39 field goals totaling 39(2) = 78 points.....for a total of (78 + 18) = 96 points
