From that period, Science, which until then was linked to Theology, separates from it and becomes a more structured and practical knowledge. The main causes of the revolution can be summed up in: Cultural and scientific renaissance, the press, the Protestant Reformation and the Hermeticism.

The Renaissance brought humanism as one of its characteristics. This current of thought and behavior preached the use of a higher critical sense and a greater attention to human needs as opposed to the theocentrism of the Middle Ages, which preached total attention to divine affairs and therefore a less critical sense. This greater critical sense required by humanism enabled man to more closely observe natural phenomena and challenge traditional beliefs about the functioning of these phenomena rather than reject them for the interpretation of the Catholic Church.
