Once upon a time there was a metamorphic rock named Reggie. Reggie lived with a bunch of other rocks on the very top of Mount Saint Helens. Reggie liked it there and would definitely rather live next to a hot volcano than in a freezing cold igloo with an Eskimo. Whenever magma or lava erupted from the volcano Reggie would hurry and find his best friend, Lola, to snuggle with. He would call out “Lola! I need you, where are you? The volcano is starting to erupt and I don’t want to die alone!” They were always extremely scared and yelled “Oh my gosh! We’re all going to die! Everyone run for your lives!” That was just a little inside joke they had together.
One hot, summer day Reggie was at the top of the volcano, all alone just thinking about what a beautiful day it was. All of a sudden the volcano started to shake. Reggie was terrified and he could not find Lola anywhere. Then, the lava started pouring out of the volcano. Reggie tried to roll down the hilly volcano to get away, but he wasn’t fast enough. He knew he was done for.
After a few hours of sleep, Reggie woke up in a strange place. He was lying on some dirt, far away from his home. Reggie was scared and did not know what to do. When he looked at his hands he noticed they were all liquid and orange. After a few minutes of thinking, he finally knew what had happened to him. He melted from metamorphic rock and turned into magma. Reggie was relieved he knew what happened to him. Then, he thought, “Oh know! Will I ever see Lola again?” Reggie was terrified.
One day Reggie was gazing at the clouds and suddenly he heard a voice call his name. “Reggie! Are you there? I miss you and I’m scared.” Reggie thought for a second “Who could that be?” Then, he said to himself, “No, it couldn’t be, could it?” But Reggie was right! It was Lola! Lola and Reggie were so excited to see each other and promised to stay by each other’s side for as long as they lived. After thousands of years of happiness, Lola and Reggie started to cool off. They were no longer orange and they were no longer hot. They actually felt kind of cold. They realized they have cooled and formed into igneous rock. Reggie thought his body was a beautiful color! He was black and had some pink. Everyday he would roll over to the pond and just stare at himself. One day when Reggie was coming back from the pond, he noticed a bird fly away from his home. Lola was not at home when he got back. “The bird must have taken Lola”, he thought. Reggie spent thousands of years searching for Lola. One Friday afternoon, Reggie got tired and decided to lie down for a while. After about twenty minutes of rest, the wind started to pick up. He suddenly fell asleep. When he woke up he felt kind of smaller. He noticed he had weathered and eroded and became one tiny piece of sediment.
Reggie was happy to be safe, but he was sad he was no longer an igneous rock. He made lots of new friends as sediment because he had so many other sediments around him. Reggie and his new best friend Sam, always talked about their life and what it was liked to be other kinds of rocks and which rock they liked best. On Reggie’s 8,000th birthday he noticed Sam was not there to celebrate it with him. He looked all over for Sam but could not find him. Finally he noticed some kind of tan colored rock in the middle of the soil. It was Sam! Sam had told him that he had compacted and cemented together and formed into a sedimentary rock. Reggie was so relieved that he hadn’t lost Sam like he had lost Lola. A few months later the same thing happened to Reggie. Reggie was happy to look like Sam again.
Exactly 3,000 years later Reggie and Sam started burning up and started to get cramps. They thought they might have a fever. But than they noticed they started to change shape and size. Reggie realized by heat and pressure he was turning into a metamorphic rock again. Reggie was so happy to look the same as he looked when he first entered the Earth. Reggie and Sam were thrilled that they were together and they looked like what they liked to be most. Reggie and Sam lived happily ever after! The End!
