Americans felt like they couldn't trust the government or the president

Answer:

The Americans felt like they couldn't trust their government or the own president. When you find out that someone of high power is lying to you and doing things they shouldn't, then it really makes you doubt whether that was the only bad thing they did. In times of distress, people look up to the higher people to help them stay motivated and to increase their morale. In the middle of the Vietnam war, everyone was probably counting on the president to help things get better. They probably told their kids "Now that's a man you can trust". Then the Watergate scandal happened. This was like a blow to the head for the American public. They realized that their president was included and that meant he was lying about things. This made them uncertain about whether they could trust their goverment. It made the public disappointed and annoyed with the government.
