According to Frederick Herzberg, there are certain aspect in every job that do not raise employee satisfaction but their presence is vital in order to maintain the level of satisfaction. Their absence may lead to tremendous dissatisfaction and drop in productivity and output and hence they are needed for smooth functioning of the company. These factors were termed as hygiene factors. For example: A good working computer may not be what an employee needs to increase his productivity but its proper functioning is essential for maintaining the employee's satisfaction level. If the computer does not work, the employee will be dissatisfied.
