Cecil Taylor was perhaps of the most uncompromisingly gifted pianist in jazz history, using a nearly overpowering orchestral facility on the piano. While his work inspired controversy almost all along, Taylor's artistic vision won't ever sway.

At his mom's asking he began piano studies at age five. He later studied percussion, which without a doubt impacted his profoundly percussive keyboard style. At age 23 he studied at the New England Conservatory, concentrating on piano and music hypothesis. He immersed himself in twentieth century classical composers, including Stravinsky, and tracked down sustenance for his jazz proclivities in crafted by Lennie Tristano and Dave Brubeck. Later Duke Ellington, Thelonious Priest, and Horace Silver began to impact his playing. By 1956 he was functioning as a professional, taking a drawn out engagement at New York's Five Spot Cafe, recording his first album, Jazz Advance, and making his Newport Jazz Festival debut.
