Meandering streams tend to form where the stream gradient is low, usually further downstream.
Meanders' outside edges are eroded by a stream, while its interior bends are covered in sand and gravel from point bars. Near the outer curve, where the stream erodes at the outside banks, the velocity and channel depths are both at their highest. On the inside of the meander, where the water moves more slowly, silt is simultaneously eroded and deposited, forming a point bar. Because a meander's outer bank erodes and silt is dumped on the inside of the bend's outside bank. As a result, the meandering streams in this terrain alternately produce cut banks and point bars.
