A rain gauge (also known as an udometer, pluviometer, or an ombrometer) is an instrument used by meteorologists and hydrologists to gather and measure the amount of liquid precipitation over a set period of time.
A rain gauge is a device which is used to collect and measure the amount of rainfall in a given time per unit area of a region. This device consists of container which is used to collect the rainfall. The amount of rainfall is measured in terms of height of the rainfall water captured in a container per unit area in a particular time frame. The collected water is expressed in terms of millimeters. It is also called as udometer, ombrometer and pluviometer. The instrument is used by the meteorologists and hydrologists to obtain and measure the rainfall over a set period of time.
