To edit means to read through and delete unwanted terms from a document, Proofread is an intense kind of reading through. No the both words are not exactly the same even though they are quite similar.
A lot of people do use the terms interchangeably, but editing and proofreading are said to be different category of the revision process. Both needs a well or careful reading.
