Stone tools are less prone to destruction than bones, they typically provide the best evidence of where and when early humans lived, their geographic dispersal, and their ability to survive in a variety of habitats.

Homo erectus had a larger brain than Homo habilis and produced more sophisticated stone tools. Homo erectus was also the first human to leave Africa and control fire .

Erectus represents a significant shift in hominin evolution, most notably in terms of increased brain and body size, as well as increasingly complex tools and behaviors.  H. habilis, which lived between 2.3 and 1.4 million years ago, is descended from an Australopithecus species.
