Astronomers believe the moon was originally a part of the earth.
It is said that years before a protoplanet - A large body of matter which orbited the sun - called Theia. This protoplanet had a size which was almost equal to the size of planet mars. Due to some reason, Thea collided with earth and as a result of the collision, a large amount of earth's matter was ejected out into outer space which remained afloat for a long period of time. Later this mass got accumulated into a spherical body that we now refer to as the moon which we see in the sky.
