A birth defect or congenital disorder is an abnormal condition that exists at the time of birth. The risk of birth defects is higher in older women as compared to younger women.

Congenital disorders fall into two main groups:

  • Environmental congenital disorders are caused by the mothers' exposure to infection or harmful environmental agents or malnutrition.
  • constitutional congenital disorders are caused by chromosomal disorders, the majority of congenital malformations and single gene disorders, are due to genetic risk factors.

Some common congenital disorders are cleft lip and cleft palate, congenital heart disease, Down syndrome, cystic fibrosis, etc. Chorionic villus sampling (CVS), and Amniocentesis are used to diagnose congenital disorders.
