Strabismus is a disorder in which the eyes point in different directions or are not aligned correctly.
Strabismus (crossed eyes) is a condition in which one eye is turned in a different direction than the other. Glasses, patching, eye exercises, medication, or surgery may be used to treat the condition.
Under normal circumstances, the six muscles that control eye movement cooperate and direct both eyes in the same direction. Strabismus patients have difficulty controlling their eye movements and cannot maintain normal ocular alignment (eye position).
Strabismus affects approximately 4% of the US population, or approximately 13 million people. The majority of strabismus is caused by a problem with the neuromuscular control of eye movement.
