Approximately, 419.2 million to 359 million years ago, this period is known as Devonian period. It had witnessed a series of mass extinctions which were led to a great loss of habitat.

The Devonian extinctions were considered responsible for the extinction of around, 70-80 percent of animal species and 20 percent of the over families (classified part of animal kingdom) of animals.

These extinctions have been termed as, Hangenberg events, Lower Zilchov, Taghanic, Kellwasser.

The possible causes are said to be, global warming, meteorite or a comet strike, sedimentation, loss of nutrients, etc.

These extinctions are widely linked up by researchers to rapid  cooling, which had led to the formation of glaciers, and lowered down the sea levels.
