Pilates German physical trainer Joseph Pilates, for whom it is named, created a type of mind-body workout in the early 20th century. The name of the Pilates technique is "Contrology."  It is prevalent around the world but is particularly common in Western nations like Australia, Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom. In the United States, there were 14,000 instructors and 11 million regular practitioners of the discipline as of 2005.
