The assignment aims to assess your knowledge of literary devices and your interpretation of the two texts presented. This should be presented by an essay written by you, but I'm going to show you how to do it.
Essay structure
- Introduction: Introduce the two texts, their authors and their themes. The introduction must be a short paragraph.
- Body: Write two paragraphs. These paragraphs should be long as they will explain your point of view. In the first paragraph, show how the themes of each text are similar and different, highlighting how they fit into different historical concepts, but with similar points. In the second paragraph, show how authors use literary devices to establish these themes and make texts more meaningful.
- Conclusion: Write one more short paragraph. In it you will summarize the most important points of your essay and show your final thoughts on what these texts represent.
"Response to Executive Order 9066" and "Mericans" have as their main theme the discrimination and isolation of foreigners and Americans ascending from non-Germanic countries. The first text approaches this theme contextualizing with the situation of Japanese Americans, while the second text shows the theme applied to Latin Americans.
Both texts make a strong use of metaphors, where they compare the situation of foreigners with Americans or other non-marginalized peoples in America, but it is also possible to see the use of simile and personification as main literary devices.
An example of how you can write your introduction can be seen below:
"Response to Executive Order 9066" and "Mericans" are texts of extreme importance for literature and to portray errors of society with foreigners. The two texts portray how society is prejudiced and xenophobic, generating problems and oppressing people for no good reason."
