Aldosterone is the primary mineralocorticoid steroid hormone produced by the zona glomerulus of the adrenal cortex in the adrenal gland.

It plays a central role in the homeostasis of blood pressure, plasma sodium (Na+) and potassium (K+) concentrations. It does this primarily by acting on mineralocorticoid receptors in the distal and collecting tubules of the nephron.
It affects the reabsorption of sodium and excretion of potassium (from and into tubular fluid, respectively) by the kidneys, thereby indirectly affecting fluid retention or loss, blood pressure and blood volume.
When deregulated, aldosterone may be pathogenic and contribute to the development and progression of cardiovascular and renal disease.
