A Intracranial hematoma is a collection of blood trapped in the tissues of the brain.

Intracranial hematoma is the accumulation of blood in the skull. It is usually caused by a ruptured blood vessel in the brain.

It can also be caused by trauma such as a car accident or a fall. Blood can pool in brain tissue or under the skull, pressing on the brain.

Some head injuries, such as those that cause short-term unconsciousness, can be mild. However, an intracranial hematoma is life-threatening. It usually requires immediate treatment. This may include surgery to remove the blood.

Over time, pressure on your brain increases, producing some or all of the following signs and symptoms:

  • Worsening headache
  • Vomiting
  • Drowsiness and gradual loss of consciousness
  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Uneven pupil sizes
  • Slurred speech
  • Loss of movement (paralysis) on the opposite side of the body due to head trauma.

As more blood fills your brain or the narrow space between your brain and skull, other signs and symptoms may appear, such as:

  • Coma
  • Convulsions
  • Loss of consciousness
