When the media adopt a skeptical or even hostile posture toward the government and public officials it is referred to as adversarial journalism.

Adversarial journalism is a subset of journalism or a journalistic perspective in which the reporter or interviewer uses a combative and oppositional reporting and interviewing style. The objective of combative journalism is to expose alleged wrongdoings of suspect actors. Adversarial journalists take sides in what they perceive to be true, rather than remaining entirely objective. In their writing, they purposefully mix facts with remark or opinion. In particular, adversarial journalists continue to be incessantly critical and very doubtful toward the government, major corporations, and political issues, events, organizations, and figures. In liberal countries where journalism is viewed as a "Fourth Estate," adversarial journalism is recognized as being traditional.
