Neurotransmitters gives recommendations to the post synaptic neuron. After its release, the transmitter binds to and activates a receptor in the postsynaptic membrane.
The protein changes shape when the neurotransmitter binds to it, allowing sodium and potassium ions to pass through the membrane. A nerve signal will fire if the signal depolarizes the neuron to its threshold and is powerful enough to do so. The proper ionic channel opens or closes, the ionic flux commences, and the relevant electronic potential is initiated if the neurotransmitter has connected to the correct post synaptic receptor and there is no interfering molecule or activity occurring in the opposite direction. Similar to a relay race where the baton is transferred to the following team member who then continues the race, the message is considered to have been successfully conveyed to the post synaptic neuron.
