What are consumers?
A consumer in a food chain is a living being that consumes organisms from another group. A heterotroph is a consumer, and an autotroph is a producer. Both are live beings that derive their energy from other living things.
Heterotrophs are categorized as herbivores, carnivores, omnivores, or decomposers based on what they eat. Autotrophs, on the other hand, are organisms that obtain their energy directly from the sun or through chemical bonding. Autotrophs are essential to all ecosystems since all species require organic molecules, which can only be produced by autotrophs from inorganic materials. Autotrophs are classed as either photoautotrophs (which, like plants, obtain their energy from the sun) or chemoautotrophs (which get energy from chemical bonds, like certain bacteria).
