Tendinous insertions divide the rectus abdominis into segments externally visible on the abdomen of a well-muscled person.

What is rectus abdominis?

The rectus abdominis muscle, or "straight abdominal," is a pair of straight muscles that is also referred to as the "abdominal muscle" or simply the "abs." There are two parallel muscles that are divided by the linea alba, a midline strip of connective tissue. It reaches from the inferior pubic symphysis, pubic crest, and pubic tubercle to the superior xiphoid process and costal cartilages of ribs V to VII. The pubic crest and the pubic symphysis serve as the proximal attachments. It fastens distally at the xiphoid process of the sternum and the costal cartilages of ribs 5-7.

Role of  lateral abdominal muscles

The aponeuroses of the lateral abdominal muscles make up the rectus sheath, which protects the rectus abdominis muscle. The linea defines the rectus as the outside, most lateral line.
