How are burns handled by nurses?
- Making sure the airway (breathing passages) stays open is the top priority in treating burn victims.
- The likelihood of an associated smoke inhalation injury is high, especially if the patient suffered burns within a room or other enclosed structure.
- Smoke inhalation can happen to patients who have been burned in the open as well.
- Using a soft cloth and water, normal saline, pH-neutral soap, or cetrimide, clean the wound.
- Applying sufficient pressure is necessary to debride the injured skin and get rid of exudate, loose skin, and slough.
- Think about if a wound swab is necessary, and perform it if so.
