How are burns handled by nurses?

  • Making sure the airway (breathing passages) stays open is the top priority in treating burn victims.
  • The likelihood of an associated smoke inhalation injury is high, especially if the patient suffered burns within a room or other enclosed structure.
  • Smoke inhalation can happen to patients who have been burned in the open as well.
  • Using a soft cloth and water, normal saline, pH-neutral soap, or cetrimide, clean the wound.
  • Applying sufficient pressure is necessary to debride the injured skin and get rid of exudate, loose skin, and slough.
  • Think about if a wound swab is necessary, and perform it if so.
