The fibers that carry action potentials to cause skeletal muscle to contract are: alpha motor neuron.

What is  alpha motor neuron?

Large, multipolar lower motor neurons of the brainstem and spinal cord are known as alpha motor neurons, also known as alpha motoneurons. They directly cause the extrafusal muscular fibers of skeletal muscle to contract by innervating them. Gamma motor neurons, which innervate intrafusal muscle fibers of muscle spindles, are different from alpha motor neurons.

Motor neurons are thought to be a member of the somatic nervous system, a branch of the peripheral nervous system, even though their cell bodies are found in the central nervous system (CNS). This is because their axons travel to the periphery to innervate skeletal muscles.

A motor unit consists of an alpha motor neuron and the muscle fibers it innervates.
