The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is a federal organization housed within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that manages the Medicare program as well as Medicaid, the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), and health insurance portability regulations in collaboration with national governments.
In addition to these programs, CMS is also in charge of other duties, such as those related to administrative simplification mandated by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), the satisfaction of long-term care facility requirements through its survey and certification process, and the high standards for scientific laboratories mandated by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments.
