What is dura mater?
In neuroanatomy, the dura mater is a thick membrane made of dense, wavy connective tissue that covers the brain and spinal cord. This is the outermost of three membrane layers called the meninges that protect the central nervous system. The other two meningeal layers are the arachnoid mater and the pia mater. It is encased by the arachnoid mater, which is in charge of holding the cerebrospinal fluid. It is primarily derived from the neural crest cell population, with postnatal contributions from the paraxial mesoderm.
The largest of the four dura mater divisions, the falx cerebri, was created when the meningeal layer of the dura mater penetrated the longitudinal fissure of the brain. This crescent-shaped layer of tissue fills the cleft and separates the two cerebral hemispheres.
