What is  greenhouse gas?

A greenhouse gas is a gas that absorbs and emits radiant energy in the thermal infrared spectrum, resulting in the greenhouse effect. Water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and ozone are the primary greenhouse gases in the Earth's atmosphere.

They allow sunlight to pass through the atmosphere, but they prevent heat from leaving the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases are generally beneficial. Our planet would be too cold without them, and life as we know it would cease to exist. But there is such a thing as too much of a good thing.

Carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), and ozone are the main greenhouse gases whose concentrations are increasing in the lower atmosphere.
