Explosive volcanic eruptions tend to build up composite volcanoes.
Composite Volcanic
Some of the most dangerous volcanoes on the world are composite volcanoes. Due to subduction zones, they frequently happen at oceanic-to-oceanic or oceanic-to-continental interfaces. They typically consist of felsic to intermediate rock, and because the lava is viscous, eruptions are frequently violent.
When magmas (such andesite) that are cooler and more viscous rise to the surface, explosive volcanic eruptions take place. Gas pressure may increase to the point where gas explosions launch lava and rock shards into the air because dissolved gases cannot escape as easily. Lava flows do not flow downhill as easily because they are much more thick and sticky.
