When administered with other drugs that enhance stimulation of serotonergic receptors (demerol, dextromethorphan, antidepressants), rasagiline can?

Respuesta :

Rasagiline (an antidepressant used alone) when administered with drugs that enhance stimulation of serotonergic receptors, can lead to a fatal drug reaction called Serotonin Syndrome (SS).

Rasagiline is a potent and highly selective MAO-B (mono-amine oxidase) inhibitor that is used for the treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD). Monoamine oxidase is an enzyme that breaks down some neurotransmitters including serotonin and dopamine.

Rasagiline inhibits this production and increases the levels of dopamine and serotonin. Increased levels of dopamine help alleviate PD. Similarly, it increases the levels of serotonin in the body.

When combined with antidepressants that also increase serotonin levels, may lead to excessive amounts of this chemical and thus cause a fatal condition known as Serotonin Syndrome. To avoid this condition, one should always discontinue taking up rasagiline 14 days before continuing other antidepressants.
