Respuesta :

An individual peripheral nerve axon is covered by schwann cells which produce a : Myelin sheath.

In peripheral nervous system, Schwann cells are responsible for secretion of Myelin sheath. Schwann cells also have plasma membrane like any other cell. This plasma membrane is specifically named as neurilemma.

This indicates that neural axon is surrounded by two layers namely neurilemma and myelin sheath. As mentioned, neurilemma is the plasma membrane. Myelin sheath is secreted by Schwann cells and is made up of proteins and fats.

The function of myelin sheath is to provide insulation to axon which further helps in increasing the speed of impulse transmission or electrical signal conduction. Significance of myelin sheath is evident by occurence of neurological issues in it's absence.
