Some areas along the san andreas fault do not experience earthquakes. this is due to fault creep.

California is traversed by the San Andreas Fault, a continental transform fault, spanning about 1,200 kilometers. It moves in a right-lateral strike-slip fashion and creates the tectonic boundary between the Pacific Plate and the North American Plate (horizontal). Three distinct portions make up the fault, each with distinct traits and varying levels of earthquake risk.

On April 18, 1906, the great San Francisco earthquake and fire caused by abrupt displacement along the San Andreas fault dramatically brought the fault's existence to the attention of the world. However, throughout the fault's lifespan of around 15-20 million years, episodic displacement along the fault has contributed to a number of earthquakes, including this one.
