Who was Hernán Cortés?

Hernán Cortés was best known as a Spanish conquistador who, in 1519, explored Central America, overthrew Aztec King Montezuma and his vast Aztec empire and won Mexico for Spain.

Primarily, Cortés came to Mexico for gold and recognition.  But when he saw Tenochtitlán, the beautiful Aztec capital, he wanted to conquer the kingdom for Spain.
