According to today's classification system, there are eight planets in the solar system.
We can define a planet as a heavy, celestial body that is known to orbit around the Sun. The order of the eight planets is listed from nearest to the Sun to the farthest from the Sun.
According to the previous scientific perceptions, there were nine planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. However, International Astronomical Union (IAU) exempted Pluto from the list of planets in the year 2006.
Out of the planets, Earth is the only known planet on which life is existing. The possibility of humans living on other planets is still being researched.
Jupiter is the planet that is known to be the largest one.
