Victory over the Spanish Armada at the end of the sixteenth century was achieved by England.
A fleet of 130 Spanish ships known as the Spanish Armada set out from Lisbon in late May 1588 with the intention of escorting an army from Flanders into England. The goal was to depose Queen Elizabeth I and prevent her from establishing Protestantism in England, end English meddling in the affairs of the Spanish Netherlands, and stop the harm done by English and Dutch privateering ships that interfered with Spanish interests in the Americas. From Plymouth, English ships set out to engage the Armada. They were able to fire on the Armada without suffering any damage as it sailed east off the south coast of England because they were faster and more maneuverable than the larger Spanish galleons. The Armada was damaged by English cannons, and a Spanish ship was taken.
